The Living-Learning Communities (LLC) on the Missouri State University campus are designed to ease students’ transition to college; to familiarize students with the campus and its resources; to provide more faculty and staff contact; to promote active learning; and to enhance critical thinking skills. The students will receive information and participate in activities dealing with such topics as academic success, financial responsibility, civic engagement, communication skills, developing purpose, and healthy behaviors, both physical and emotional. The students will also participate in social activities throughout the year to help them connect with other students within the community.

Floor Environment

Each LLC floor has a specially trained student staff including a Resident Assistant (RA) and a Programming Assistant (PA) to facilitate the social and academic activities for the residents. The PAs and RAs work closely with faculty to ensure a well-rounded approach to education. Each floor will have at least two faculty members assigned as Faculty Fellows. The Faculty Fellows will assist in academic programming as well as interact with the students during social events. The goals of our Faculty Fellows are to not only meet the educational needs of our students but also to increase the interactions between freshmen students and faculty members. Our Faculty Fellows are drawn from a variety of academic disciplines and are committed to building community by learning together.

College of Health and Human Services Future Health Care Professionals Living-Learning Community

This LLC is an ideal living community for students interested in a health care profession. Students will have the opportunity to live with and learn from other students with shared interests and goals. Students will have interactions with faculty from the College of Health and Human Services outside the classroom through programming, informal advising, and mentoring and have networking opportunities with alumni and potential future employers. The Future Health Care Professionals LLC will house women on Blair 2 and men on Blair 3. Requirements: Major in a health care profession (CHHS major); completion of interest form; space is limited.

Floor Activities

In addition to the activities planned on other floors, these students will be introduced to monthly topics related to academics (e.g., study skills) and personal development (e.g., managing finances). It is our belief that students who gain knowledge of these topics early and practice them in their daily lives in an environment with others will do better during their time at the University and in life after college.

Student Incentives

Residents who choose to participate in the Living-Learning Communities will avoid the crowds by moving in a day before the halls officially open (Thursday). They will also quickly get to know other students at our kick-off event on the following Friday night. Additionally, LLC residents will reapply for housing before other students. Students who participate in educational and social activities throughout the semester will receive points for attendance which will be compiled for special drawings. Also, students currently in the Living-Learning Community were exclusively invited to continue on to the new Second-Year LLC for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Commitment Statement

The Living-Learning Community is an academic program – one that expects and helps students to become scholars. It is a residential program – one that expects and helps students to become reflective and respectful members of a community. With this in mind, we expect each Living-Learning participant to sign a commitment statement at the opening banquet. The commitment statement may be modified for the next year; however, these are the basic guidelines we have set forth for the Living-Learning students. Please review this document and let us know if you have any questions. The commitment statement can be found at this link.

“I enjoy all of the LLC activities set up exclusively for LLC students. I really have learned a bunch, and it has made my transition into college that much more enjoyable ... I was able to make friends a lot faster at MSU than my high school friends who were in non-LLC floors.” Jesse Loyd
